After them, seven other cows came up - scrawny and very ugly and lean. I had never seen such ugly cows in all the land of Egypt.
20
The lean, ugly cows ate up the seven fat cows that came up first.
21
But even after they ate them, no one could tell that they had done so; they looked just as ugly as before. Then I woke up.
22
"In my dream I saw seven heads of grain, full and good, growing on a single stalk.
23
After them, seven other heads sprouted - withered and thin and scorched by the east wind.
24
The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads. I told this to the magicians, but none of them could explain it to me."
25
Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do.
26
The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream.
27
The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.
28
"It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do.
29
Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt,
30
but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land.
31
The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe.
32
The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God, and God will do it soon.
33
"And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt.
34
Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.
35
They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food.
36
This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine."
37
The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials.
38
So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God Or [of the gods] ?"
39
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you.
40
You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you."
41
So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt."
42
Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph's finger. He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.
43
He had him ride in a chariot as his second-in-command, Or [in the chariot of his second-in-command]; or [in his second chariot] and people shouted before him, "Make way Or [Bow down] !" Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt.
44
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, but without your word no one will lift hand or foot in all Egypt."
45
Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, That is, Heliopolis; also in verse 50 to be his wife. And Joseph went throughout the land of Egypt.

Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh's presence and traveled throughout Egypt.

During the seven years of abundance the land produced plentifully.
48
Joseph collected all the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities. In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it.
49
Joseph stored up huge quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea; it was so much that he stopped keeping records because it was beyond measure.
50
Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.

Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh [Manasseh] sounds like and may be derived from the Hebrew for [forget.] and said, "It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and all my father's household."

No entanto, eis que outras sete vacas emergiram logo depois delas, exaustas, de aparência feia e mal alimentadas: jamais vi animais tão debilitados em toda a terra do Egito.

As vacas magras e feias devoraram as sete primeiras, as vacas gordas.

Mesmo depois que as devoraram, não demonstravam qualquer benefício em tê-las devorado, porquanto sua aparência continuava tão extenuada e feia quanto no início. Então acordei.
22
Mais tarde voltei a sonhar e vi sete espigas de cereal, cheias e saudáveis, que cresciam num mesmo pé.

Depois delas, brotaram outras setes espigas, murchas e mirradas, ressequidas pelo sol extenuante e o vento leste.
24
As espigas magras engoliram as sete espigas boas. Contei isso a todos os magos e adivinhos do Egito, mas ninguém foi capaz de esclarecer-me!`
25
Então, José explicou ao rei: ´Em verdade o Faraó teve um único sonho, pois ambos têm o mesmo sentido: Deus anunciou ao Faraó o que Ele vai realizar proximamente.
26
As sete vacas belas e gordas significam sete anos, assim como as sete espigas saudáveis e cheias representam sete anos; é um só e mesmo sonho, portanto.
27
As sete vacas feias e magras que sobem em seguida simbolizam sete anos e também as sete espigas mirradas e queimadas pelo sol e o vento oriental: é que haverá sete anos de fome.
28
É exatamente como eu anunciei ao senhor: aprouve a Deus mostrar ao Faraó aquilo que Ele vai fazer proximamente.
29
Sete anos vindouros de muita fartura chegarão e abençoarão toda a terra do Egito.
30
Entretanto, em seguida virão sete anos de fome. Então, todo o tempo de abastança será esquecido, porquanto a fome arruinará a terra.
31
A fome que se abaterá depois dos bons anos será tão severa que o tempo de abundância não será mais lembrado sobre a terra.
32
O sonho veio ao Faraó duas vezes para deixar claro que Deus já se decidiu por assim agir e se apressa em realizar o que determinou`.
33
E concluiu José: ´Agora, portanto, que o Faraó escolha um homem inteligente e sábio e o estabeleça sobre toda a terra do Egito.
34
Que o Faraó aja e institua funcionários supervisores na terra para recolher um quinto da colheita do Egito durante os próximos sete anos de fartura.
35
Eles deverão reunir todos os víveres que puderem desses bons anos que virão e acumular estoques de trigo que, sob o controle do Faraó, serão armazenados nas cidades.
36
Esse estoque servirá de reserva especial para os sete anos de fome que se abaterão sobre o Egito, a fim de que a terra não seja aniquilada e o povo não morra de fome!`
37
A palavra e o plano de José agradaram ao Faraó e a todos os seus sábios e conselheiros.
38
E, portanto, o Faraó proclamou diante de sua corte e oficiais: ´Encontraremos um homem como este, em quem esteja o Espírito de Deus?`
39
Então o Faraó declarou a José: ´Visto que Deus te fez saber tudo isso, não há ninguém tão perspicaz e sábio como tu em nossas terras!
40
Tu serás o administrador do meu palácio e todo o meu povo se conformará às tuas ordens; só no trono te precederei!`
41
O Faraó disse mais a José: ´Vê: eu te estabeleço sobre toda a terra do Egito`.
42
E o Faraó tirou do dedo seu anel-selo e o colocou no dedo de José. Mandou que o vestissem com linho fino e colocou uma corrente de ouro fino em volta de seu pescoço.
43
Também o convidou a subir em sua segunda carruagem real, tendo à frente os arautos do império que iam bradando: ´Abrek, Inclinai-vos!` Assim José foi empossado no comando de toda a terra do Egito.
44
E acrescentou ainda o Faraó: ´Eu sou o Faraó, mas sem tua permissão ninguém erguerá a mão ou pé para dar um passo em toda a terra do Egito!`
45
E o Faraó impôs a José o nome de Zafenate-Paneia e lhe deu por mulher Azenate, filha de Potífera, sacerdote de Om, cidade do sol. Depois José saiu a inspecionar toda a terra do Egito.
46
José tinha trinta anos quando se apresentou diante do Faraó, rei do Egito, e José deixou a presença do Faraó e percorreu toda a terra do Egito.
47
Durante os sete anos de abundância, a terra produziu copiosamente,
48
e ele reuniu todos os víveres e o trigo excedente dos sete anos em que houve grande fartura sobre a terra do Egito e depositou-os nos armazéns construídos em todas as cidades egípcias. Em cada cidade ele armazenava os cereais colhidos nas lavouras das redondezas.

Foi dessa maneira que José estocou tanto mantimento, que desistiu de ficar pesando e contabilizando as cifras; as quantidades iam além de toda medida: parecia a areia das praias do mar.
50
Antes de começarem os anos de fome, Azenate, filha de Potífera, sacerdote de Om, deu a José dois filhos.

Ao primeiro, José deu o nome de Manassés, esclarecendo: ´Deus me fez esquecer meus dias difíceis e toda a família de meu pai`.
